Julia Domna was the wife of Septimius Severus and mother to Geta and Caracalla. Following Septimius Severus' death, Caracalla, unwilling to rule jointly with his younger brother, lured Geta to Julia Domna's quarters where, absent the normal protection of his personal guard, he was killed. Indeed, if some accounts are to be believed, Geta was actually in his mother's arms at the time the murderous assault was carried out.


This type was issued during Caracalla's reign. I have it as RIC 373a (RSC 32, Sear 7100).
