I picked this coin up for $2.50 from a coin show yesterday:

Atribution-Of-A-1939-Iceland-10-Aurar

It was labeled as the 1939/6 variety. Can anyone verify this? The two nines certainly look different.

Also, I'm thinking that the wear on the crown keeps this coin from being XF. Would that be a correct assumption?

The nines look a little different to me too. Comparing to a 1936, I think that little leg above the 9 could be the end stroke of the 6--not sure here since I don't know what to expect on the markers--anybody else? The details look a bit flattened for an XF; perhaps more of a VF+? Either way--nice coin for the price!

I think that protrusion sticking out of the top of the nine definatley looks like the tip of a six. That is very neat!

Thanks for confirming that for me norseman12! Information on foreign coin varieties can be difficult to come by.

I'm all to happy to help and the reason why the 9 in 39 is diffrent from the first 9 is becauce the Copenhagen mint in Denmark produced a bunch of die's without the last two digit's of the date and when it came time to strike more coins they engraved the last two digits for the year that they resume production. you will see this with all the coins denmark minted for Iceland between 1922-1940. and in the later half of 1940 or somewhere about, England's Royal Mint took over and the coin dates was much more consistant and uniform in apprearance. You all have a great coin collecting day.

nice VF 9 over 6. the price is about normal. not sure what Krause has it listed for in to 2009 book, but that seems about right.

glad to see others are collecting Iceland. I started in the hobby with Iceland and have a decent collection. the cool thing about the Icelandic coins - prior to 1940, the total mintage figures are very low and are more rare than the 1909 VDB S Lincoln Cent.

for more information on Icelandic coins, check out this history from the Central Bank of Iceland
