I bought it in a lot from a dealer at a show. He said he thought it was a British carriage token.

I'm fairly certain that we've had one of these previously and IIRC the ID hinged on identifying the reverse.

My first impression was that it was sulky or harness racing that was being depicted, which led me to these images of one that was listed on ebay as such:

Your specimen is obviously in far nicer condition.

I don't think it is actually a "sulky" or harness-racer. I think it's East Asian in origin, or at least depicting East Asian scenery:
- The "sulky" driver is wearing a Chinese-style pointed farmer's hat;
- The two buildings on the reverse have an oriental "pagoda-style" roof;
- the plant on the reverse appears to be a rice plant.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I see that headgear as a billed cap such as jockeys wear, and to me it's definitely a sulky being pulled by a trotter. But I agree the rest of the motif seems to be Asian.

Perhaps this reconciles thsee two characteristics:
