Got this one off ebay and I'm pretty sure its a trumpet tail. It has FSB and does not appear to be cleaned. Thoughts on grade/ attribution?

If it is, it should be worth some fairly good money, because only one graded one has sold recently on ebay, and it xf40 and sold for $65.

That's it! Nice pickup. I would grade it somewhere in MS 62-64 based from the photos, but not FB.

Could you give us a close-up pic please? Not everyone here is familiar with what "trumpet tail" means.

Not to be dense, but could you show us a comparison and point out the "trumpet tail"? Thanks.

Click on the varietyvista link for San Francisco MM style above, and scroll down to the 1941-1945 MM style, you can see the difference where the normal straight serif compared to the extreme rarity of the Trumpet Tail style. http://www.varietyvista.com/06%20Me...20Styles.htm

These can be picked with some looking. Going through about 500 mercs this week I pulled 4 I think along with some RPMs and DDOs.

Any thoughts on value? I can't really find many sold examples.

FWIW, the PCGS price guide lists $150 at MS-63.

You're welcome Mr. Frog. This one is hard to put a price value on, only the serious Mercury dimes collectors would pay premium on. It is not popular like the over dates, nor the RPM's most knows about, like many other series, it had rare key dates that collector asks them self why haven't this one gone up in value? There's probably less than 1% of these minted with the Trumpet Tail style, and who knows how many survived because many were melted during the silver price jump. As the CPG said, finding one in MS grade is a rarity, and one in FB is exceptionally rare.

macmercury Thank you very much! That information helps me out a lot, especially because I still need to get the Cherrypicker's Guide that includes dimes.
