the dark marble seems to pass right through. no scratches of any kind just darker and lighter color.
has anyone seen that before?

I have never seen it before on a 1980 coin. Woodgrain! Looks great, I would keep it!

I have seen this befor and if its the same its a bunch of micro scratches on the coin

any idea how to find out if it is scratches. My eye hurts from this magnifing glass and I can't seem to tell. the dark passes threw the letters without harming them at all, not even tinny little scrapes.

If it's woodgrain, it's caused by striations in a bad alloy. It's not scratches, but bands of different color (composition) copper.
