A die crack raises above the surface of the coin. A coin scratch is incuse on the coin.

Note the die crack on the die on the left reverse side? Note that the crack leaves a slight void on the die, so the opposite happens on a coin. The void gets filled in with planchet material and the coin will show a raised area on the coin.

Note the raised area on the die crack. That is what they should look like.
Working Hubs make working dies.

To under stand dies a bit more what they look like, take a common coin that is circulated and make a ball with clay and flatten it. The press the coin into the clay. Then carefully take the coin out and you will see what a die looks like. (A die is a negative, a coin is a positive. Hubs are positives. They look like coins.
