Or do I have a small Date in bad shape?

Large Date with Machine Doubling, causing the devices to be reduced in size.

Looks like a LD with damage not MD to me.

Here is what I spotted on this one that shows the small date clue the best:
1970-S-Lincoln-Penny-Sd.-?
Note the lower image of the inside loop of the '9'. That is the clue for this die. Note the pictures of the direction of the loop on the normal and small dates above. The second clue. The normal view for a MD example throws off the lower '7' clue. But there are always back ups on exceptions to the rule.

I have to agree that it is probably damage caused while minting...though the damage area to the mintmark is somewhat different then would be caused by the die jumping in one direction.

Machine Doubling doesn't follow any rules except one. That is reduces the size of the devices. It can more in several directions after the strike. It moves at the machines will. But note on all the areas that are affected, they are all reduced by the bully dies after the strike.
