Best advice is to never clean any coin that you find CRHing. With that said, an acetone bath can improve some coins without much chance of making them worse.

Hunt em' with .308!

Just kidding, as Spence said never clean coins, it always hurts them. The only treatment I could possibly advise is 100% acetone. Not nailpolish remover, but 100% pure.

I feel if it a circulated coin with wear and crud stuck to it, it's ok to flick as much of the crud off it so you can read/see date and mm and other devices..lets face it a VG coin is not going to be harmed if you rub it between your fingers..then if you think you see an error soak it in acetone and remove residue with your favorite picking tool..Let's hear what others feel...

Yeah. I agree with greasy fingers. If it's circulated and found in rolls I don't use any extra care really. As far as cleaning goes some water aND a q-tip goes a long way, for harder gunk even a toothpick.

I don't use the same tactics on bought coins though or coins with good value but the usually good to xf $5 or less coin found in rolls, yeah I'm not going crazy about it. The amount of rub and wear a coins gotten in regular business use.. I don't think cleaning up some gunk with water is going to make a difference even if I do some rubbing with my fingers, or a q-tip ect. Just don't go as far as polishing.

Now, chemicals.. I don't see much harm in acetone on silver. I'm uncomfortable with using it on copper though. Not sure how that works out. Copper in general can discolor so I just stick to water usually.
Rest in Peace

If your talking about Old Lincoln Cents that are real dirty ,unless they are a key or semi-key I would just toss them .You will never get them cleaned without ruining them .
However an acetone soak could be beneficial depending on the dirt or crud .
