acid damage?

looks like its from inside of coin.

looks like a smaller one over T in STA"T"ES

Looks like damage caused by zinc rot to me. Keep for reference or spend before it completely rots away.

I agree. It's an unfortunate case of zinc rot. Spendable, since it's not an error coin. PSD.

When the plating gets split, then the zinc gets oxygen and the zinc breaks down.
