Hey guys, I got this coin recently as a ND Half Dollar. It sure as heck looks like 1879 to me, I compared the last digit to the 1870, and it doesn't look the same to me. I think 79 is the date. Maybe it's just wishful thinking. What are your thoughts?

The 1879 is a very low mintage date. Perhaps 1870?

It's definitely possible, it's hard to show in the pictures, but in person it really does look like a 79 to me. Very tough though :/

Very hard to identify from the pictures but I would say it is an 1870 S Half Dollar. I think I see directly under the arrow feather under the branch. From the looks, the last digit is rounded which would make it either a 0, 3, 8 or 9 and if it is a S mintmark that would eliminate the 9. The placement of the "S" would then eliminate the 8 and 3 leaving the 0. That is why I believe it is an 1870 S Half Dollar. Can you confirm the mintmark on the reverse?

I'm seeing 1872 here. one of the lowest grades with a date still visible at all I've seen.

I never saw the "S" before, but now looking at it it is possible. I'll have to take a closer look after work. Thanks for your feedback!

If there is an "S" then it cannot be the 1872 as that mint mark placement would not align to any die marriage.
