I was looking at coins online and almost bought this 5 reichsmark proof. I have owned some third Reich coins before, but had never seen a proof issue. After finding out they exist, I about jumped to but it.....but then I startedlooking closer. The one in the capsule is the coin in question, the other pic is from NGC website. My suspicions are the heavy cameo, and if you look at the pattern of the lines of hair above the ear, they're not even close. I'm trying to get more info from seller, but haven't heard back yet. Any ideas?

The moustache and the ear are different as well. I look forward to expert advice on this thread.

Another big clue is the fact that NGC doesn't seem to acknowledge the existence a proof. They are usually listed between the business strikes on the same page.

I'm sure someone with firsthand knowledge will voice an opinion, but I would only buy it if it was cheap, and I wanted to add it to my other counterfeits.

WAY too many differences identified (I would add that the border where the hair meets the field is completely smooth all the way around on the authentic coin, and not so on the coin in question, the brow is quite a bit more prominent on the authentic coin ...)

The coin in the plastic capsule is probably not made of silver.

This seems to be a novelty strike in some base metal and with a gold finish.

The specimen was probably produced not to fool someone, but as a cheap medal.

Such medals are often passed by so-called collector-subscription companies where people pay little, but get nothing for their money.

Just an update, I'm still working on gathering info from the seller. But he assures me "it's definitely real" so I should probably just buy it also, it is apparently plated in 24k gold.

Note loads of proof/non-proof strikes Paul von Hindenburg (fakes) and the Adolf Hitler marks, load of other nazi coins and unfortunately this coin as well, general all of them will be plated coins. They are made to commemorated Nazism?

This is more of a modern fantasy than a fake in my opinion.
