I purchased a collection earlier today and this coin was included in the lot. I have no idea what it is or where it is from and I was wondering if any of you knew anything about it. Thanks!

Not my collecting area, but it resembles Mughal rupees (or fractions thereof). Maybe Muhammad Shah? Drnsreedhar would know for sure.

Yes, Indian Mughal-era rupee (10.8-11.6 g) or half rupee (5.4-5.8 g). Please post weight and diameter to aid identification. I think I see a regnal year 4 in the second photo. The top photo should be rotated 180 degrees.

The coin weighs 11.6 grams and has a diameter of 1 and 3/4 centimeters with the edge measuring .5 cm thick. Hope this helps in identifying the piece! Thanks for your thoughts, Bob L and Seeker55!

I just noticed an interesting edge inscription. Does anyone know what it means or if it helps in identifying the coin any further? Thanks!

Thank you for everyone's opinion! One final question - how do you think this coin would grade?

In general, in my experience, based on international grading standards, Indian coins are given grades about one level higher than U.S. coins of comparable wear. With this in mind, I'd give it a solid VF.
