I was wondering what penny is a better one to keep. Close mint or the far away one. Or does it matter? I know these are not errors because the mint mark is done after the strike. Right?

were it me, I'd keep the one on the left... I don't like the carbon(?) spot on the one on the right even though it's probably in a bit of better shape.

I like the one on the left, but I'd keep both.

I personally like the eye appeal of the left one better.

Hummmmm......

I vote RIGHT. The coin is more sharply struck, has more details and the color is more even. It's just a soak in xylene away from being a nice coin. The black crud looks easily removable to me. It's just loose surface stuff. It has a much nicer deep brown patina that collectors desire.

The left coin has a molted appearence, probably from an unintentional cleaning at the bottom of a cup holder. LOL It also has a harsh scratch in the most major field on the coin. I will also tell you the black marks on the left coin are irremovable. Those are deep down into the planchet.

Shameless plug....but...if that's verdigris on the right coin, hard to tell with a scanner, that could be removed in 5-10 minutes with VERDI-GONE™ at full strength. And it wouldn't change the patina at all.

Wrong. Mintmarks were administered to each individual die. Thus the minor variations of placement. Since 1989 or 1990, not sure exactly, the mintmark is engraved on the masters dies and passed to the working dies helping to ensure a little more uniformity. As to which one to keep, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
