I came across an auction for these three Fourth Century bronzes. The one on the bottom caught my attention. The legend looked strange to me. A closer look revealed that is reads CONSTANS IVN NOB C.

This is one I have not seen before. I am familiar with Constantine II, as Casear, with IVN NOB C, but not for Constans.

I bid on the lot and won it for a very reasonable price.

An online search revealed this example from VCoins:

These are the seller's photos of this interesting coin.

Very neat find! Constans as caesar is tough to find in general, especially so for the two standards type. I'm curious to know about rhe IVN... in the late Roman period, does that imply that he was named after another Constans, or just that he was young/youthful?

I wonder if it could also be an engraver's error? Leave out a couple letters and you've turned CONSTANTINVS IVN into CONSTANS IVN - wouldn't be the first known engraver's error from this period.

The use of IVN for Constans surely a misunderstanding on the part of the engravers which was quickly fixed. In RIC VII, Bruun says that this "is merely a curious contamination at an early stage..." (RIC VII pg 31)

another example--

I came across that quote in RIC. It is interesting that the obverse legend was used in at least three officinae.

one from Siscia and one from Nicomedia
