I found this interesting 1956 penny evidence evidence of the RPM are on the obverse and reverse of the coin. It looks to be an inverted "D" to the south and a rotated "D" to the north just below the date. Thoughts?

Wow, never seen that before. Looks like someone tried to fake a 1956-D RPM with a homemade mintmark punch.

Not a real error, just PMD.

Definitely not a US Mint punch mark! Pretty different though! I' definitely call it post mint damage... novelty value only. Still worth 1 cent for a certainty! Good catch.

@timmy, yes those "mintmarks" seem to have been added by someone after the coin left the mint. Additionally, I see that your coin has a die chip between the B and E in LIBERTY. These so-called BIEs are quite common on cents from the 1950s, but still fun to look at as legit mint errors.

I'd probably save it in a 2x2 for the novelty of those counter-punches.

Looks like they made a soft die of the mintmark area. The reverse is flattened because of the damage to the mintmark alteration.
