I've received a number of ICCS coins lately that I'd sent in. This one has caused a little dust up with a knowledgeable, long time collector I've shown it to. He insists the opinion of the leading grading and identification company in Canada is wrong and it's not a Large 8. What do you think?

Look no further than the cross at the top of the reverse crown
If it's like a bow tie with a dot in the center you have a large date.
If it's like a plain cross punched over top of a bow tie you've got a small.
Can't be 100% certain from your pics but it kinda sorta looks like cross over bow.

Thanks DBM and fortcollins for the input! It does look like a cross on top of the reverse crown. But the 8 doesn't look like a small 8 digit and yet it doesn't have the robustness of the large 8 loop cross-over either. Is there a third variety for this date? I have higher grade small 8 coins here but the 8's look distinctly different from this one. And they do have the cross on top of the reverse crown. Puzzles me.

Refurbished dies can look very different. Sm 8.

Thanks, Mike! You and my longtime collector friend would agree. Now the dilemma: to break it out or leave it be.

I haven't encountered an erroneous attribution with ICCS yet, but it might be worth contacting ICCS to see if they would cross it over with a corrected attribution at no charge. Having their authentication and grade opinion is worthwhile. The grade looks spot on.

Fortcollins, I'd love to leave the flip as it is. What I could do is submit one more 1908 to ICCS that has the identical type of 8 on it and almost the same grade. I have quite a few of the year here and this second example is a dead ringer for the coin you see in the ICCS flip that began this thread. I might do it and see what they assess the coin as. I remain perplexed but interested.

The grader at ICCS is not the same one that built their reputation. I have a nice au sm 8 if you need one for the test.
