Hello-

I'm wondering what the process is... when that special coin pops into existence and its in your hand...
People do win the lottery sometimes! now what?

Perhaps someone can explain the best process of dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's...

Thanks!

@hip, I'm thinking that this thread might be best placed in the variety and error section of CCF.

I wasn't sure. This question is non-specific to the coin. I was trying to reference something like say... a 1960 with a Wheat cent back(not that I have one) or a 1984 bronze penny...(not that one either) Or like that experimental glass penny thats out there somewhere...(nope). I was just wondering how or what you need to do if this shows up? (We all want this to happen don't we?)
There was that 1999 mule penny that surfaced recently, whats the process to make it official? what steps do you take? how many places for authentication? Whats the cost going to be? How do you handle the announcements? perhaps these questions will help the new collector at this hobby see what you need to do.

Possibly already many such coins have been found. Usually people just put them in a 2x2 flip or something like that, put in a box and forget it.

I think David (Errorsandvarieties) would be best to answer your question, lately he has found many new DDRs/DDOs..

Assuming it's a major discovery:

1). Consult an expert.
1.5). Get it published (Talk to someone who writes for CoinWorld or get it published in a book, like the CPG, or on a major website, like VarietyVista) Sometimes this happens at the same time as Step #1.
2). Third-Party Grading
3). Decide to keep or sell

I think that's how it usually goes.

For an error, maybe talk to Mike Diamond.
For varieties, submit to Dr. James Wiles at VarietyVista.com
