I posted this 1966 SMS quarter that I found the other day. The eye is missing etc (you can clearly see the problem) my question was "what caused this"?...then I ran into this 1966 p regular strike quarter thats just like my SMS
Now, I'm wondering if maybe my SMS quarter was struck with a regular strike die? Is that possible? I tried to edit but it had been over 24 hours so I couldnt.

Hello Tldemars333,

Clear close up pictures without the glare are needed.

Probably an Over Polished Die issue, from polishing off a bad Die Clash mark. http://www.error-ref.com/thinning-a...gn-elements/

Looks too shiny to be a proof. The 1965-1967 were SMS (Special-Mint-Sets) and were not as shiny. Also you could see the copper layer on the edge of the coin on the reed areas. If they are plated, that is covered over. Also the die is showing sever field reduction, also telling me it is not from a SMS die. It should be more dull looking.

That would make sense, because the chrome process is in three steps. Copper/nickel/chrome. The three layers make it a lot more brilliant in look. Pretty much worth value now.

Im not sure. I purchased it in a sms set with all the other 66's. Ill get a pic of the set in a second. The dime, nickel and quarter all look the same but the kennedy does look a bit less shiny.

I don't really know, not a specialist on SMS, but what's up with the big white fiber looking thing on the reverse? is that a squiggly scratch or a large piece of lint because it's there in the lens picture and out of the lens pictures both?
Proof or SMS shouldn't have that, whatever it is. would lead me to believe if it's a fiber, it's possible the set was opened and tampered with, only if it was a struck though wire or something would I think it wasnt' tampered with, and still I'd think it was tampered with.

you can put a mirror shine on anything with Jewelers Rouge Or Blanc Buffing compound bars and a buffing wheel and a bit of time. Done right with skill it only the really experienced would know it's been polished, even the hirlines, swirl and micro scratches are gone.
