Hi All,
This quarter is worn far more than a normal 1986 quarter should be. The simplest answer would be that it was ground down years ago and then circulated giving it some toning. But, I can't help but wonder, what if it was a trial strike or a weak strike. What's your opinion? Any guesses as to how it got this way if it's PSD?

Better pictures can be provided if requested, but like many things, I figured it's probably good enough.

There is no reeding and the copper is fully exposed but not recessed. Acid?

Just a heavily damaged and a very worn coin with Post Strike Damage ( PSD). Probably was sanded down a long time ago and then it was intentionally put back into circulation, so it can be spent.

@kn, I agree that it is almost certainly excessive wear as opposed to a mint error. Can you please post the weight?

It is 33 years old and probably circulating that long also with stops along the way in the void. it's not the worst I've seen from the 1980s, at least it's not rusted and corroded. it's probably seen a lot of games of Pac-Man. the reeding can and does wear smooth over a good amount of time and wear.
