These are really quite rare, with PCGS only showing 9 graded in MS RED condition. I can't remember ever seeing another one myself in MS other than the top-pop MS-67 that is currently for sale on ebay for a meager $2700. So I bought a partial roll of 46 1944-D B/U coins for $25 today, and was smiling more than a little after taking a look through it. This one should grade up quite nicely. Die marker is the die crack from behind the ear into the hair. 1944-D Lincoln Wheat cent doubled die DDO-001, FS-101

Oh yeah, it'll be heading to PCGS soon enough. But I have to admit I'll be rather upset if this only goes 63. My photography shows every microscopic detail, but in hand there is almost nothing visibly wrong on the coin. I've seen worse coins at 66, but I can never figure out what it is they use to grade coins so am thinking 65 and hoping for 66. It looks a little more toned in the photos than in hand, so pretty sure it'll go RED.

My grade on it would be Ms-64/MS-65 at best.

Very nice find! That die crack could be so easy to miss.

Thanks all for the super kind comments! Always a fine day when something like this one drops in.
Demelone - the doubling on this one is very hard to miss when you see it, especially on the date. The die crack is just something to look for after you see the doubled die to verify the attribute. There is another doubled die, DDO-007, which is similar and much more common. But that die crack is the proof that this is DDO-001.

Looks awesome! I like a lot of the class 6 doubled dies, especially the DDRs. Good luck with the grading!

Congrats on a very nice DDO. I was thinking MS65, possibly 66 if that lite N-S scratch in front of his lips isn't too noticeable in hand. Sounds like the previous owner "skimmed" off the 4 best looking coins and didn't check for varieties, much to your benefit.
