Looks gold to me but looks can be deceiving. Best bet is non destructive testing of some type I would think. Good luck!

Generally they put the karat weight on the rim or medal probably plated, Between a troy ounce and regular the above weight listed would put it around in the neighbor hood of 7 ounces with that much gold I would say they would state it on the medal 3" in dia and 1/4" thick. That is a heck of retirement give away.

Surely nobody thinks a retirement giveaway at U.S. taxpayer expense is a half pound of gold? Best bet it is gold plated.

When you work for a secretative government agency for a 3rd of your life I don't think receiving a 7 ounce chunk of gold is a big deal for the taxpayers come retirement time. Especially if you happened to be an operative on the front lines in 3rd world countries for a big part of your career! To whomever received it: "Thank you for your service! Enjoy your retirement...you earned it!"

Especially if you happened to be an operative on the front lines in 3rd world countries for a big part of your career! I'm not denigrating anyone's service. I just don't see that as being appropriate. I've never heard of any employee in the for-profit sector getting a $10,000 gift/award at retirement. To my way of thinking, that makes it inappropriate for a government employee. Federal employees who retire with 35 years' service get a pretty handsome pension. That's fine with me. As for the medal ... A solid disk of 22K gold with the dimensions given (76 mm diameter, 7 mm thick) would have a mass close to 553 grams. If that 7 mm thickness was measured on the rims, then this calculation will be too high, but I'm still skeptical it's gold. A jeweler or coin dealer who buys bullion will be able to tell you.
