There are only two dates for these 8 reales pieces issued for the Provincias del Rio de la Plata (Argentina). I picked up the 1815 years ago in Buenos Aires and have been on the lookout for an 1813. This one became available and I jumped on it. This 1813 has a medal alignment of obverse to reverse, while my 1815 has coin alignment.

What are your comments, and how do you think PCGS graded it?

I agree that it is high AU in terms of condition. A very nice example for sure.

A historical and relatively scarce coin from Rio de la Plata, (60-70 recorded auction sales in acsearch) from the very early days of the newly independent South American
Republics.

I am fairly certain that it is weakly struck in the center of the coin, both sides.

Must be - hardly looks VF in those areas. I'll say AU-50, just a stab.

Lovely coin! There is an MS-63+ 1815 on CoinArchives https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...640f69cfb742 , and I agree yours has less definition right in the center (nose/mouth obv and hands rev). On the other hand, the lines behind the cap are stronger on yours, detail on the leaves is pretty close.
I'm with those who said a high AU grade. If you were lucky, maybe a tad better.

Thanks for the comments. PCGS called it at AU-55 which I think is fair. There is plenty of luster and the central weakness I agree is almost entirely due to strike. These pieces are pretty notorious for being weakly struck in the centers.

Great looking coin and conservatively graded.
