Just had a close look at some of my half crowns and noticed some sort of detail on the inside curve of the 'c' in crown on the 1970 and what looks like an unusually straight die crack on the 1937 running from the '1'. The first picture is of a 1970 without this extra detail. Not sure if this is a variety or some sort of mint error? It is definitely not a scratch.

I've just checked the coins in my own collection.

I've examined my only 1937 business strike halfcrown and it doesn't exhibit the same feature as yours, which I agree looks like a die crack.

I have two 1970 proof sets, still in original mint packaging. On both of them, the halfcrowns show nothing unusual inside the 'C' of 'Crown'. Is the little detail definitely part of the coin rather than a small piece of material from the original case? Some of the coins in my sets exhibit similar tiny squiggles but close examination reveals them to be little flecks from the material used to hold the coins in place inside the plastic cases.

Hi Rob, thanks for taking the trouble! Are such die cracks favourably regarded at all among collectors in the UK? As for the 1970 I've gotten it out of the 2x2 and it is indeed some sort of extraneous detail, much like a looped string of all things! Some sort of unrecorded variety, or a really strange die crack perhaps?

Generally, there is far less interest in die cracks and other minor varieties in the UK than in the USA, although I think things are beginning to change. British collectors tend not to pay too much attention to such things and they don't make any difference (positive or negative) to the value of a coin.

That's alright then, i'll be keeping it for myself. Quite unusual how neatly aligned that crack is between the adjacent denticles though, and I just have to wonder what is up with the 1970! Wish I had taken a good second look at all my other sets before selling them off those years ago
