Hi all,

No Ebay-finds this time, but a set of three coins from a bigger lot that once belonged to my grandfather. He stayed a while in Iraq during the 60's and passed away some years ago. I stumbled on a little bag with coins (including at least two Roman/Byzantine and a possible Greek/arab overstruck) while cleaning up a closet that belonged to him. You could probably imagine my reaction. I tried to ID's these three, but wasn't able to. I feel they are connected somehow (maybe same caliphate/ruler?).

Thanks in advance,

Kaj

All 3 are the same. Lu'lu'ids of Mosul, Badr al-Din Lu'lu', 1233-1258, as vassal of the Mongol great khan Mongke, called "fals" in the marginal inscription but sometimes referred to as dirhams by collectors because of their size, mint of al-Mawsil (Mosul) in northern Iraq, the two on the left are dated AH 656. The date on the coin at right is illegible. All 3 are overstrikes on earlier coins which is typical. Album 1876 (S).

According to Album, 'This is one of the earliest types to have inscriptions in Persian as well as Arabic, the former padshah-e ruy-i zamin, "emperor over the face of the earth", likely a title of Chinese origin'.

Thanks for the amazing ID'ing! Interesting that these are all Mosul mints, as that's where my grandfather spend most of his time in Iraq.
