My adult son found one and gave me a call. I have not seen it yet but I said likely post mint damage. Could one ever be released that way into circulation? I have not seen the coin. It is a 2012.

None could be released that way. They are easy to get out '' just ice the core or heat the outside and they pop right out. It is PMD

Was on the coinsandcanada.com site last night and saw a picture of a 2006 offset missing core (certified). It is located in the coin value guide for 2006 toonie, near the bottom of the page with the errors. Click the listing and there is a photo.

Yours probably is a PMD but you never know without seeing it. So as is often said on this site Photos please!

The CaC site has examples of "offset" strikes, an entirely different error. You can make a handful of popped-out cores in 5 minutes in the garage.
