Just maybe to help or hinder there seems to be a symbol above the elephant maybe a Ciliarch crown...? Also maybe Seleukid Kings of Syria?

It looks like a small L and Z over the elephant. The notes that were supplied seem to indicate there are other letters that were cut off. No idea how accurate the notes are...

Jay beat me to it. Likely L-Z. Might be from Alexandria. For comparison to the reverse of a Trajan, dated L-Z, from that mint:

@jay, not my area of expertise, but it kinda looks like you have a Dichalkon of Alexandria (RPC3 4823; Emmett 719; SNG France 1206) issued under Trajan. If so, then there is some discussion about whether that animal is an elephant or a rhino. This coin has LIZ on the rev. Added: I always like to see that my best guess aligns well with the correct answer from @bobL!

@Bob That coin looks pretty similar! Do you or Spence have a link to info about these Trajan coins.

Here's another one (I did a little shopping this weekend :) I think this is also provincial but not sure. One side says "CARESERD" the other says "MAN" and possibly "OIAV". It's 2.3 grams and 17mm.

Quote: looks like it's in the fake reports... That could explain the puffy letters and remaining details.

They are invaluable resources - databases - that list fakes of ancient coins. There is one at Forumancientcoins.com and another at the forgerynetwork.com.
