I had a question about this on an email and decided to make it into an information post. This will save me time when the same questions can be covered. (Feel free to copy for your educational information files)

I would also add...

Don't hold the camera in hand, use a box or other support to steady it when taking the photo, this helps to reduce the fuzziness and shaking of your camera, which usually happens when you click the button.

Also more light is better, just try to avoid hot spots and glare areas on the coin.

Try to shoot the coin (if possible) out of any type of holder, flip or other plastic cover in the way. Not possible with a slabbed coin or mint/proof sets, GSA Dollars, , but easy enough for most other coins. If the coin is in a case or holder you can't remove it from, be sure to clean or polish the area in front of the coin as well as possible.

I always hold my camera when taking my images through a scope. The secret is to hold the lens against the ocular. Then check to make sure the lighting is correct, angle is correct and looks clear. Then take the image.

Obviously, there are photography pro's and semi-pro's out here, as well as the novices like myself. Of course, we novices are grateful for tips to help us improve our results. Thanks!

The best way to improve your images if to keep experimenting until you find a better way to do it. If you need help with your setup, take images and post them here to see what we might suggest trying to improve your images. Some have the right equipment, just technique needs improving. Light direction/diffusing/angling a bit, but not too much.
