As a tribute to the new members of the Coin Table, I (Sir Mike) have decided to throw this grading practice into the field. If anyone feels that they can assist in the pictures, please, feel free to shoot me an email and I will send the origianls to you for enhancement. What you are grading:This is a FINE (not the grade) EXAMPLE of an 1881 San Francisco Mint Morgan silver dollar. There were about 12,760,000 minted in this year from this mint. Though Morgans can be an expensive and difficult set to complete, it is not impossible (unless you try collecting ALL the VAMs, CCs, etc...). This is the coin that Lady Knightess Kerri fancies and is almost always able to turn a head when shown. Anyways, here's the coin: Image: grade81sobv.jpg21.32 KB Image: grade81s.jpg16.08 KB Good Luck! (And here's a hint...the coloring on the obverse of the coin is reflection...it is NOT toning.)

Sir Mike and Lady Kerri-- It looks like a very nice Morgan, but even though I can't resist looking at any Morgan, I wouldn't want to attempt a grade on it. Do you have a scanner to make a little larger and flatter image? Of course, you could always send it to me and I'd be happy to image it, grade it, store it...

Image: obvscan1.jpg102.31 KB Image: revscan1.jpg92.79 KB I KNOW that these scans do not do this coin the justice is so deserves. Lady Kerri was doing her duties as a Knightess to protect this fair coin. (Unfortunately, Sir Mike, in his dim-witted quest to open the air-tite...FAILED!!!) [:p] Anyways, I will help with a fair description of the details that are missing from these scans: Strong Luster, the Bird has FULL FEATHERS (EVERYWHERE), and the fields are nice and shiny (mint shiny...not cleaned shiny). The reverse even has a cameo type appearance. Now....do your homework fair followers of the Morgan.

Based upon the information provided about lustre etc. (that I cannot see on the scan, but I know what scanners can be like all too well) then I would have to change my initial guess.
The second set of pictures had me thinking gEF or AU, a nice strike and that but lightly circulated. However, if lustre is intact or fairly prevalent then I'm happy to go UNC.

I see this coin as an MS63. The scan made the coin look like it may have been cleaned (judging by the look around the letters). There are a few too many marks on the cheek and field to raise it above 63 in my opinion. This is also based on full cartwheel luster.

Looked cleaned to me too on those second pics. The marks and scuffs on the obverse made me think gEF. But then I have to remember these are big coins and bagmarks are an obvious occurence. So I thought better of it, although I'm still not certain.

Wow! Susanlynn...I can't believe that I missed that OBVIOUS point. I didn't notice the foggy look around the letters. Thank you!!!

SM & LK-- Yeah, I hate to admit it on a beautiful Morgan which is obviously in either very high circulated or, more likely uncirculated state, but it appears from the scan it might have been buffed. Of course, one never can be sure from an image, so I'll tender my offer again to send it to me to inspect, grade, and store it. Mind you, I don't make this offer every day, so instead of brutally rejecting it as you did earlier without realizing the absolutely altruism and goodheartedness of my offer, you might reconsider... after all, I have only your best interests at heart. I'll send you my mailing address offlist. Fred

Fred, please, forgive me for making it sound brutal. That was definitely NOT my intention. I do respect and thank you for your offer though. Actually, we are in the process of considering having it professionally graded. (Again, please, forgive me...I do not know if you work for any of the TPGs. I am not trying to offend anyone regarding anything. I am not that kind of person.)
Again, we do thank you for your kindness and respect you for the thoughtfullness.

I should have used a kinder gentler word than "brutal" or I should have put in some "sobs" [picture icon for tears] to show satire. There is nothing to forgive - I loved your response! I might suggest sending it to ANACS for grading if you decide to go that direction. In this manner, if it's determined that the Morgan has a problem, it'll still come back in a slab rather than in a very expensive flip from one of the other TPGs. Please continue to put more Morgan pics in the forum. I can sit and look at Morgans all day! Fred #5

Fred...I think if I were a magician...I'd turn you into a Morgan that is graded by PCGS (or ANACS) as an 1895 MS70. The slab would sit next to a giant mirror. This mirror would hang above Susan and Bobby's mantle. This way, you could be admired by the two most loving people in the world and get what you want. (Next time I'm in Merlin's dungeon...I'll what kind of stuff he's got boiling in that pot and see if it'll work for you! ) Until then...I'll do my best to keep the pictures coming! (I just hope we don't run out of Morgans to keep the kiddies happy! ) By the way...here is an overall shot of just SOME of the Morgans in our collection. (Fred, please, try not to drool on the airtites or flips!) Image: compressed morgans.jpg24.79 KB
