Controversies out there on a damaged mintmark punch tool. I have 5 that show strong doubling mimicking actual RPM. The doubting starts when you notice the secondary mintmark underneath is always a shade lighter than the primary. Have kept all 5 and will someday get these out to Wexler in hope of a definitive opinion. I am of the opinion there is actual 1984 D RPM's and several at that. The thickness and serrifs on 2 of my examples appear as classic RPM. It is possible for a mint employee using a defective punch to strike twice. Not all of these can be dismissed as splitplate or Strike Doubling.
Split plating happens on RPMs or non RPMs, On Doubled dies and non doubled dies, on Machine Doubling and I feel that Machine Doubling helps cause the split plating on the Zincolns.
