Looks like a broken post to me (as opposed to damage).

Broken post? What does that mean?

Do you mean post mint/strike damage?

Ah sorry for my confusing nomenclature, no.

On the die that the mint uses to strike coins, the features are reversed compared to the resulting coins. For example, the middle of the letter D sticks up from the die so that this post can create a depression in the surface of the flan. As the die gets older, these tiny features can start to chip and finally shear off completely. In the case where this post has sheared off completely (a "broken post"), the mintmark will be filled in completely. Your coin seems to have this feature.

Oh alright thanks, makes sense now. I presume that I should throw this one into the copper bucket?

Very common error. I would just throw it into the Copper bucket.

Alright, back awhile ago I saw a bunch of these when searching. Guess I thought I would try and see what exactly they were. Thanks all!

A broken post will show as a filled center of a device, or even raised over he top of he mintmark if part of the post breaks off below the post area. Note the '8' is not just filled in the image above, but over filled because of the void on the die.
