Hello all,

I have a 1984-d Jefferson nickel that appears to have some doubling but then also some interesting things going on around the edge. I am not sure what to make of it. I am hoping you guys can help clarify! I have put up quite a few pictures but if you want some more or of a particular spot please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

No Cud. Looks like DDD,die deterioration doubling aka VLDS,very late die state. Also looks like Longacre doubling. There are many types of doubling, some have a premium some do not http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/...Doubling.htm

Not Longacre doubling. Entirely a different issue.

The issue with this coin is that die is wear down so bad the devices are breaking down. It appears the die has been polished down several times and the side of the devices were getting affected. Then as the flow lines developed, things continued getting worse. While the 'U' on UNITED appears to have a notch, it maybe just a contact mark as all the rest of the devices are not showing the same thing. I see no evidence of a Cud. On the obverse it looks like some metal what removed off the outside edge of the die. Enough to make a raised area between the devices near the rim. The devices are enlarging from die wear. You might want to save it for an educational piece to a new collector.

Just a coin in a Very Late Die State. Heavy Die Deterioration shows with heavy die flow lines. Devices are breaking down from severe die wear.

Thank you! It is good to know it is a late stage die. I always keep any 1984 coins (year I was born) but I will be keeping this one as an example too, that way I know what I am looking at in the future. Thanks for all the help, I truly appreciate your knowledge and expertise!

Never said it was Longacre doubling only that it kinda looks like it. On the 2x2 you may want to note it is not Longacre doubling as a reference.
