Oh.My.God. I cherrypicked this just recently and it just got it. I bought this from an ebay like site last week as a 1909-S, I didn't even see the VDB and it wasn't mentioned by the seller either. I got it for $50 as a corroded 1909-S and when it came in and I went to photo it for my digital album I thought I saw three special letters. I threw it under the loupe and *Wham*! This is the craziest thing that's happened yet. I'm considering selling it to finance some type coins I've been looking into, but I kinda want to keep it as a hole filler.

Probably worth getting an ANACS authentic grade.

Wow!! Some of you guys have all the luck and some Grade A peepers for spotting Good ones !! Do coins like this with this much corrosion or damage still bring a good premium for errors ? Have you ever checked out TopHatter? It's like ebay but 90 sec auctions. I've picked up some nice coins for little to nothing !

I'm not an expert - but have seen enough of these that to my eye 'something' is off on the VDB initials.

Concur that an ANACS authentication would be worth the cost if you intend to resell at a premium.

I dunno nickelsearcher. The reverse is Struck Through Grease in a few areas, that may just be effecting it. The spacing of the periods is correct for it to be an -09-S VDB

Wait, you paid $50 for this as a straight 1909-S?

yes, @coinfrog. It looked about F-15 Details, and for $50 that was a deal I couldn't pass it up

Sha-zam!
Congratulations on a super pick.

Going to give it a soak in Acetone or hydrogen peroxide since it is already a details grade?

$50 should easily buy you a nice worn brown AG-03 example of the 1909-S. With respect, this is a cull.

Understood coinfrog. I dunno, I guess in this case I decided I'd rather have a details then a straight AG. However, in this case I'm very glad I did!

Very interesting. I agree, it might be worth sending in for authentication, unless you just plan to fill your album hole.

Haven't yet decided. I think I'll keep it for now. There are some pieces that if I sold this I could buy that I've been eyeing
