It could have been counterfeited before it fell into the hands of the grim reaper .

The reverse is Struck Through Grease in a few areas, that may just be effecting it.

It is VERY rare to see an S-VDB Struck Through Grease. In my lifetime I've probably only see 2 and they were minor. This coin was at some point completely corroded and harshly cleaned. There might not even be enough there for a TPG to authenticate. If there's the slightest doubt, they will not slab it. GOOD LUCK

I agree Thad, it's about as cull as it gets.
@Tbop, could be, but I have no idea. MM position and dot placement is right so
@machine, no clue. At best $200

About the best you can hope for is a no-grade "Authentic" decision. Petty horrible coin. You're more adventuresome than I would have guessed.

Looks authentic to me.

I figured it would go north of $300 but not over $350.

@coinfrog I really appreciate your mentorship. Bottom line, you know more and have more experience then me, and I appreciate you sharing it.

It's a thrilling find...I probably wouldn't have given the coin a second look, even as a 1909-S, based on it's condition. Way to go.

You are out of the nest and flying on your own. I will always watch your decisions closely and offer comment if appropriate.
