Just found this 64D Jefferson nickel this afternoon while roll searching.

This looks like a possible RPM.

The coin is in not too great a shape grade wise, has some rim damage etc, but I can see at least 2 D's and maybe even 3 , especially the upside down picture seems to show it pretty good.

What do you think?

Hi Bill:

Why is this a MD and not a RPM?

Even though the outside d (EAST) appears flat, what about the possible second d (West) of the initial center D?

Either way, good educational piece for future references.

Hi,

Because you don't see what needs to be there for it to be an RPM. Same as a doubled die. You need to see notches, separations and splits. This mintmark is just damaged with metal moved from point A to point B.

Since the rest of the coin had to take some serious hits as it is tough to wreck the rims of a nickel, the likely scenario is that the mintmark was damaged along with the rest of the coin.

So damage + it doesn't have the right characteristics to be an RPM = It isn't.

Thanks,
Bill
