Hello to the cities! I'm fairly new to the community. My collecting of error coins has led me to finally ask about what I have. I am in need of advice. Does anybody know what this is? I know that it's a Mercury dime. But is it struck on two planchettes?
to CCF. It is not an error,it did not leave the mint like that. What does the other side look like? Weight? Looks like the edge is wrapped, maybe a jewelry piece? John1
I've read that sailors sometimes did this to coins to wile away the hours at sea. Once the edge was rounded, the center was drilled out and smoothed to create a silver ring. If this dime was originally damaged with a ring in mind, it would have been for a child. Since there's as yet no drilling, the "perpetrator" may have had another silver jewelry item in mind. I've heard this process of pounding the rim referred to as "spooning"; this, as a spoon was often used to hammer the edge.
Just think .... This coin might have been to Normandy and back!
