Newb Q = What is the "Best" album for a beginning "type" collector with a somewhat limited budget, a Dansco 7070 or a Whitman or Another brand? And WHY?

Thanks, Bill.

I started with Whitmans and they're decent. Then I got my first Dansco. The quality's a lot better and the prices aren't too different (especially if you shop around online). I like the Danscos well enough that I'm in the process of upgrading all my Whitmans to Danscos.

The dansco album goes back to the early 1800s, which gets expensive for a beginner. Whitman has an album for a 20th century type set, which should be easier to fill. When you fill it, you can switch to the dansco and sell the album for 50% or more of what you paid for it, if it's still in good condition. You can still get coins from the 1800s like the two and Three Cent pieces, you'll just have to keep them separate. If you buy a dansco, you'll have empty holes to look at for a _long_ time.

For a newb I'd recommend 20 pocket binder pages, 2x2 cardboard holders, and a list of type coins. This way you can determine the size and cost of the collection to pursue and expand it when you are ready.

As your knowledge and interest in coin collecting grows then you can make your own determination if standard type albums are adequate for your collection.

For a beginner I suggest the Whitman Albums. They are in general much cheaper to purchase for one thing. They also have a 20th Century set that is easier for a beginner. Or you could order blank pages and make your own but that is difficult since their pages are all of the same denominations. Probably the best suggestion so far would be the plastic pages that hold 20 2x2 flips and fit into a standard 3 ringed binder. With those you could make you own type set. The Dansco one is rather on the expensive side and has places for coins the average starter outer will have problems filling. For a new collector that is one of the easiest ways to loose interest.

The Whitman 20th century would be easiest. The Dansco 7070(19th and 20th centuries) leaves out some of the most expensive and rare 19th century coins and you can complete it for $1-2000 if grade is not much of a concern. I have seen another Whitman type album(not sure if it is still made or not) that included the 18th century issues as well- imagine having to get Flowing Hair and Draped Bust coins from the 1790s to complete an album

Personally, I have the 7070 and I have put about $2000 into mine so far with a few holes and some upgrades left.

There isn't a type album made that makes sense. First you have to define what you consider a type. None of them have a consistent definition.

I wish the 7070 had a few more coins, like the three different 3CS types and the large diameter bust dimes and quarters- I would certainly consider those major multi-year types.

I have to agree as well. The choices made of what to include and exclude is a problem with all of the album manufacturers. With the 19th century coins, it seems like the 7070 just gets your foot wet.

Do not even get me started on the 1922 "plain" being included in all of the LHC albums.

I want a definition of LHC types, along with a list. I can probably show where it's incomplete.

7070 just looks nicer and more "professional". Go with the 7070.

A 7099 is for large cents 1793-1857.
