My boss told ma a GREAT story at work today and I really have no reason to doubt him. My boss is 65 and it involves a family friend that was born in 1900. Apparently when my boss was young (like 12 or so) this guy drove him to the various coin clubs they belonged to. Bear with me it's a killer. Seems the friend, Mr. Peterson, was originally born and raised in Minnesota. As a child of 8 or 9 he was a paper boy. You know, the kind that stood on a corner and yelled "Extra, Extra read all about it!" The newspaper was a penny and he got a cut from what he sold. An enterprising youmg lad he gets and idea! He saves up his money and knows the people at the bank. When those new pennies come out he buys a roll. Now when people buy a paper he shows them one of them new pennies and sells them for a nickel each! Hey, good money back then. It was later in his life, and interest in collecting, that he found out his bank tended to get all pennies with S mintmarks! Willing to bet he sold a lot of SVDBs for a nickel. WOW!

I wish I kept all the silver dollars grandma gave us when we were kids(birthdays,holidays)...instead we got lots of cavities from buying candy with them...THAT'S LIFE!

Back in time? You have no idea how much I wish I could go back to being a kid again. When I was a kid you would see Indian Head cents in change all the time. Occationally someone would still try using those large cent things. A new penny just came out that looked like Silver but was really Zinc coated Steel. ALL Dimes were Sitting Liberty, Liberty heads and a real lot of brand new Mercury dimes. Standing Liberty quarters were as common as anything but the Liberty Head quarters started to look worn. I remember when I was a kid how people complained about putting some guy's face on a Dime instead of a lady. Real Silver dollars were used all the time as well as Walking Liberty halves. I saved a lot of that stuff but sure wish I knew more then so I'd no what to really look for.

My brother-in-law must have been thinking the same thing when I saw his hoard of 1500 Sac Dollars in rolls. Unfortunately, they were all common date 2000 P/D and I doubt they will be worth a big premium even a few years from now.

One of the most interesting SVDBs I've seen was a bad luck token, AU.

Yeah.
When I was younger(I've told this before) I would get my 50 cents weekly allowance, get a roll of pennies and put them one by one on the train tracks. Voila, with a little shaping I had $5.00 in slugs!
Here's the kicker, just for youse guys, I preferred the war time pennies because I could use them in vending machines in front of other people. It looked like I was using a dime.
Yeah, my bad. Some day I'll tell you about my liquor tax stamps debaucle.....
A word to the wise, don't mess with the Feds!

I still have 30 or 40 rolls of those steel cents. As to using coins on RR tracks. I wonder how many kids all over the country did that.
