Hi all, This is my first post. I've been collecting for a few decades (mostly off, rather than on). I finally completed the Lincoln set and have recently started on Indian Head cents. I just wanted to say hi and show some of my sets. Thanks My First Set is actually my original set, its the Whitman Folder with 1909 to 1940. I'm missing the key dates for this one. This is another orginal one, this was the first one I ever finished (1941 to 1973)

From those 2 sets, I went to complete the Lincoln series. So this is 1974 to 2013. And while getting the missing ones, I found an old Wayte Raymond Album, that was on sale and missing a few of the early sets but was in BU from 1935 to 1960, so I picked tht one up. I finally completed that one in July. That has everything from 1909 (including the 1909-S VDB) till 1960. This picture is a few months old so a few of the early ones have been updated to AU/BU finish.

So my question is.... "I found these while walking the dog are they worth anything?" HAHA just kidding (I've been lurking for a while) and the answer is No, I didn't buy any on ebay. I have a few LCS (local coin shops) that I get what I'm missing... (and I did find the change while walking the dog;) )

what a fun first post I doubt there are many collectors that haven't worked on small cents. My grandma bought me my first blue Whitman at a Ben Franklin. While we were having lunch the waitress let me look through two rolls of her cents - and I was hooked. I still have that album and consider it a prized possession.

Being serious the question is, I started the the Indian Head cent collection and I'm missing a few of the key dates and I'm trying to figure out what a fair value (I won't pay Red Book, those are crazy prices) and I'm not looking for slabbed, so for the keys 1877, 1908S and 1908S whats a fair price for VF+? Thanks all

If you have a desire for those rarities in that grade, or close to it, I would strongly recommend NGC, PCGS, or ANACS to insure they are genuine. You can still print a photo and put that in your album. For reliable prices I recommend Heritage SOLD, ebay SOLD, and Great Collections SOLD. The emphasis on SOLD is to check that before looking at the coins for sale. Please remember that the variety of prices for the "same" grade is because value is a combination of grade and eye appeal.

Congrats, nice looking sets! If you are going to buy the keys in any set raw, and I don't advise it, be sure you know the the MM positions and other telltale markers for genuine examples before you commit. to the CCF!

Thanks all for the warm welcome. I'm not per say against slabbed coins, but I myself don't see the value, as 1 they cost more than a RAW coin and the grading can be challenged (even says that in the Red Book), NOW if I was collecting BU/MS coins than I can see the value in slabbed. I personally think for some one like me, the key to a good collection is having coin dealers nearby that have been in business for a while. I'm still on the fence for the last 3 IHC as the cost of slabbed is IMO too high. I do appreciate all the advice, I wish I had known about this website when I "cleaned" a few wheats, oh well you live and learn.

I have an FE and an IHC set, both complete. I had LWC set at one time but sold it off to get money for older coins.

A top tier TPG costs no more than a raw coin for higher value coins (over $200). Let someone else pay for the submission and buy the results. Having a Coin store does not always equal knowledge. Most shops have real coin nerds. But not all. We've had a zillion reports of bad coins bought from every possible source.

Quote: Having a Coin store does not always equal knowledge. Most shops have real coin nerds. But not all. Oh yeah. I agree. Luckily I have 4 coin shops within 15 minutes of my house, not to mention an authorized dealer for bullion coins (although he isn't my favorite). Sadly the nicest guy has limited selections and I pretty much cleaned him out of all the stuff I wanted. I tried ebay and for the most part didn't like what they were selling and I've purchased a lot and have a relationship with a dealer in another state for key date coins I can't find locally, I like to shop around and while price is nice, I like dealing with coin nerds more :) I actually made friends with several current and former members here before I joined. One thing I learned is that I'm a newby and I really appreciate all the advice (doesn't mean I'll take it but I like reading the opinions)
