I was in a local convenience store late last night, and as usual checked my change for my purchase. For some reason I have found a few BU 1944-D cents circulating around here recently, and in the change I got here at this store was another, but that is another story. The guy behind the counter noticed me checking the change, and he asked me if I knew coins. I told him I did. He said about three years ago he was working part time running an ice cream truck, when a young boy (a real "wise ---" as he put it!) approached him asking for a free ice cream. He was told that he couldn't have it for free. The boy then said he would run into his grandma's house to see if he could get some money. He came back, and said he had a dollar, but it was a coin, not paper. the child put on the counter a silver dollar; a real silver dollar. 1868!! Of course the guy took it, and he immediately took it to a dealer, who offered him $150 for it. He refused, and he said he still has it. He said he would bring it in to show me, and when he does I will try to get a photo of it to share with all of you.

I think he should have came back another time and returned the coin. Obviously the kid stole it to buy some ice cream.

I agree; it's what I would have done. Unfortunately I'm not the guy's conscience. The kid more than likely got his hide tanned for doing it!

I think he should have sent that kid right back home. Even if he didn't know a lot about coins, he would know it was worth more than an icecream. That little boy probably had no idea what it was worth. His grandmother must have been so upset. Great that he has a valuable coin but I would have nightmares sleeping with something in my house that I know hurt someone to get. If I were him I would go back to that neighborhood and try to find that family. but thats just me
maybe a little dramatic but thats a sad story.

If the little boy did steal it then that is sad... But what if grandma gave it to him. I mean a lot of older ladies get collections there husbands had and turn it into the bank. My uncle had cut some trees for a lady and she paid him with crisp 100 dollar bills from 50 and 60 years ago. AND HE CUT THEM JUST A YEAR AGO.

Interesting alternative point-of-view, but it would not have hurt to make sure that the kid obtained the coin by honest means, especially when he later determined it was worth at least $150.

Is it a bad thing that I want to buy an ice cream truck?

Great parallels in this story: little boy: "Ooh. Ice cream--must find money" ice cream guy: "Ooh. Silver dollar--must find dealer"

Not sure how far he was from the house but it sure wouldn't have hurt to walk there, knock on the door and ask if the kid stole that coin. For all anyone knows he may have been doing this for a while and will continue if his grandparents are not aware of that.

As a side question, are all coins always legal tender? As an extreme example, could I pay for a candy bar with 100 Half Cent coins (not that I would)
