Picked this one up a little while back and was wondering if a copper layer missing is not a possibility or could it be foreign planchet. Ideas on grade appreciated as well. Assuming dark patches are grease transferred from the die. Weight is 2.49g

Sorry resizing my images threw the resolution off.

Not quite sure of your question. The dark colors is zinc showing from the copper plating being broken would be my thought.

I think the black areas are grease. It looks like an unplated planchet if that color is gray?

Yes coop it is indeed grey and the details in the beard hair and monument on the reverse have me leaning towards it being unplated.

Nice pick-up. I would put that into a 2x2 (no cleaning to remove the grease or whatever else that is).

Take Spence's advice. Put it in a 2x2 and don't clean it, since it will ruin the coin and value.

I don't think its grease, I think this coin does have the copper plating and those dark spot are where the zinc is showing through. Either way don't clean it.

Can't believe I had to go back 42 pages to find this. This error cent and a few of my keys will be going to national auction in the next month or two wondering if is appropriate and allowed for me to post a link beforehand. Or just the after pictures will be graded per sale. Some coins are bought for the collection but some I have purchased because the price was simply right. Have other ventures I would like to pursue while collecting. If it's allowed how do I post it appropriately on here like another reply or as a new post with new pictures? Thank you forum family.
