if its not in a slab there's a good chance this is not authentic. based on these photos it looks like the reverse of a coin was added to an original front. I'm definitely not knowledgeable in this area but there have been counterfeits of this coin that have even fooled some of the TPG's. if its authentic it would be AU details cleaned but looking at the coin edge on that reverse photo it sure looks like an attached reverse. need some experts on this one to chime in

I'm leaning towards genuine, AU details for harsh cleaning. The date, mintmark position, and reverse die crack look consistent with VAM-5A.

Clearly AU details, can't offer an authenticity opinion.

that is good to know, this is a reputable seller, but the bid is already at $7500 which is what I have for book price for an AU and there is two days left on bidding
Rest in Peace

I'm seeing nothing to indicate a counterfeit.

Polished very strongly. This may have been broken out of an AU details, improperly cleaned encapsulation. Sometimes on big coins you get unknowing buyers who don't know cleaning bidding higher than if it were encapsulated, IC.

I don't like the look of the rim on both sides. Not a coin I would buy. A larger photo of the obverse would help.

Thanks silverwolf. Looks like a cropped photo so can't see the entire rim on both sides. Like I mentioned, not a coin I would buy.

I've come across "the docktor" before. Have to say the username doesn't inspire a lot of trust when dealing with coins...

Must be some really new collectors on ebay all the time. I have not been collecting long, but am starting to know what to look for, and when in doubt check here with those who know more than I do. This coin went for over $8000 last night, and in checking with the comps that sold a cleaned AU in a slab goes between 2-3 thousand.

That coin went for some serious money. I'd wouldn't spend that kind of money on a raw coin. I do like the die crack on the reverse though.

yes and if it is cleaned as everyone here has commented I don't think you will get the slab you want. I do understand buying raw coins, but it is riskier, and you need to know a lot, but for example if this coin where not cleaned and you picked it up for even $12,000 you could be looking at a real windfall if it came back ms 60.... thanks for all the help everyone

While true, that type of thinking is exactly what the people cracking out details coins to sell raw are banking on. 99.9 percent of bad buys can be eliminated by looking at things without thinking about potential windfalls. There's almost always a reason why a 4 figure numismatic coin is raw and basically all but a minuscule percentage are bad for the buyer.
