On the 1968 cents there was a progressive issue with the master hub.

It was swelling outwards, as the years went by. Finally when it was time to replace it, (1969) on the 1968 cents dies, the devices were swelling out so far, that the devices were on the rim. Checking into this we see if was not a die issue, but an enlarged master hub that was the cause, then this was passed all the way down to the working dies.

So the next year they created a new master hub Which hadn't been done for many decades.

The 1964 and previous years were starting to show this need.

The enhancement of the master hub during the wheat years with the channel around the outline of the bust, the enhancement of the throat area.

Then in 1982 there needed a new master hub again with the small date.

We also see new master hubs for quarters 1943 was one. I figured this one out because the initials were missing several years. Someone asked a question about these initials on a 1942. So I did something checking around and discovered the new master hub the next year. Also in 1982 there was an issue on the quarter with the same issue of swelling of the master hub and in 1983 they created a new master hub.

Things you discover when a question was asked. Just writing this down, reminded me pr probably another master hub was created. The initials on the 1918-1934 VDB cents on the initials was V.D.B.

On the 1935-forward master hub, the dots were no longer there. There is just VDB, instead of V.D.B. So probably another new master hub was created in 1935. I guess it takes thinking about changes, that you realize that this may have been the cause of the change.
On the 1974 year they had the large and small dates that year.

Why that year? Well they were making a new design for the new metal that was debated about happening that year. Perhaps a stronger design change to enhance it better on the new metal.

Sometimes it takes time to put it all together.
