My son found out that coins may be worth more than their face value. He has been asking me to help him look through his coins to find valuable coins. I am not a coin collector so I am trying to learn and teach him along the way. He found this 1968 penny in his collection it has some oddities to it. I found out the the 1968 die was messed up and there are a number of issues with this year. I was trying to get a handle on this to explain to him and help him understand what to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to CCF!

I don't see anything unusual about this cent, besides circulation wear. Keep asking and best of luck on new finds

Well it is as valuable as all others that year. The deices on the rim area look like that on all cents that year from all three mints.

to CCF...Obverse shows signs of a MAD (mis-angled die) strike, causing the thicker rim on the date side. Liberty looks normal, as far as the motto (IGWT) being close/attached to the rim that was caused by a old/aged master hub. Hopefully someone will post some links ,so you and he can go over....
It would be easier just to give him your debit card....
again and keep asking, have fun making memories

Edited: wow I'm a slow typer...Coop posted the thread I was talking about

Thanks Coin Community members. I will share the information with my son. He thinks he has hit a gold mine an now I have to curtail the fever without killing the enthusiasm.

I think this is something he will like doing just trying to guide him as best I can to the proper resources. He has been going through coins all day looking at google.

What is a good resource to help him?

Well he might enjoy the youtube video's on my signature line. (Numbers 1-5) The series I call "Coin Fishin', what to keep and what to throw back." It has almost 1K images on the series. It is about 2 hours long, but broke down is segments of about 20 minutes each.

There is a lot more to suggest when he finishes with these.
