Years ago I managed to acquire a small collection of sovereigns and half sovereigns back when a full sovereign cost just £40. Then when gold went high and my personal circumstances were low I sold them all for a healthy profit but I always regretted parting with them.

A few years back I decided to do something about this and decided to slowly fill this box. The idea was ten different portraits but I didn't realize George VI was an impossible task... yesterday I added the final coin which was the 2012 with the unusual reverse design. Even over that small period the values of these have shot up as gold seems to be going mad (the effect of a weak pound)

Anyway I am pleased to have done it, I still have a couple more elsewhere (full and half proofs from 2002 with the shield reverse for example which I didn't want to break out)

As a kid I had lots of money, because I worked for may father, from age 12. He never charged board, and I spent all of my money on coins.

As I currently write this, it just happens to be Father's Day. **

By 1966, I had completed a type set of 17 Australian 17 gold coins, which included 9 different sovereign types (1855-1931), with an Adelaide Pound of 1852 - Australia's first gold coin. The set also comprised a type set of 7 Half Sovereigns, (1855-1918), all of the Sydney Mint.
Alas, they were sold in 1976, to pay for the deposit of our first house.
Because of what I saved and invested in coins, I never had o pay a cent rent in my life.

**As a teenager I remember asking my dad-
"How do I repay you for raising me as well as you have?"
His answer struck deeply, and I have done my best to follow it through.
He said:-
"You owe me nothing, but you do have a debt - you all of that debt to your kids."

I am now a very proud and happy Grandfather, and MY now mature kids have done THEIR best to follow through on that advice given to me, so very long ago.

Well done!
Must feel good to complete a set.

But you left me hanging.
What's the difficulty with getting a George VI sovereign?
Perhaps they didn't strike any?

They had extremely low mintages and thus are about 10 times the price of an ordinary sovereign.

I have a 1937 plain edge proof £5 and a £2, but the 1937 Geroge V1 proof sovereign and half sovereign outside of the set, are considerably harder to obtain, because they form part of a British type set for those denominations. (£1 and £ 1/2)
That is despite the fact that the mintage for all gold denominations for George V1 is the same, at 5,501.

Thanks Mr Frog.

I can't really justify trying to get hold of one, it would be nice to have a George VI but I can't really justify the money.
Rest in Peace

My sincere congratulations. I've never understood why folks don't add a little gold to their collections.

Why spend $1000 on a silver dollar but not on an MS $10 Indian.

If anything, gold is a more notable collection inclusion.

Second only to adding a new year to my OFEY, adding a little gold here and there is my favorite. Well done!

David UK:
perhaps the 1937 £1 of George V1 may be a little too pricey for you, but if you are after a £1 gold coin of George V1,
it may be worth considering the South African £1 of 1952.
They can be had for a much cheaper price. 4,508 specimens and 12,000 proofs were struck. Not British, it has a springbok on the reverse. However, it is denominated as a £1, not a Two Rand

The British 1937 £1 of 1937, and the South African £1 of 1952 are the only two ways in which a gold £1 of George V1 can be obtained.

I am particularly interested in gold coins of the period
1933, when most countries came off the gold standard,
up until about, 1960, when the gold price started to rise.

during this period there was very little interest in gold, because the price was fixed - thus endowing the precious metal with a perceived poor investment potential.

Very few gold coins were minted anywhere in the World in this period. That is what makes it interesting for me.
The 50 Pesos of Mexico 1944 - 1947 is the most obvious exception.

Thanks for the tip Sel though I think even that is not the most readily available coin (no examples on vcoins that I see)

In any case it's something to bear in mind, though I just bought a box for ten half sovereigns so that's next in line.

To find 50 peso coins, you probably need to look on bullion dealers websites (like APMEX, here in the US). The 1947s (and perhaps other dates) were extensively restruck long after 1947, and are among the lowest-premium gold bullion coins available today.

I have only a handful of gold coins from the 1933-1960 era:

- 1945 Mexico 50 pesos
- 1947 Switzerland 20 francs
- 1951 Saudi Arabia 1 guinea
- 1955 Dominican Republic 30 pesos
- 1957 UK 1 sovereign
- 1958 UK 1 sovereign
- 1959 Turkey 500 kurush

Many of these might be modern restrikes.
