Anyone who scrolls through ebay searching for dollar coins will know what I'm referencing. A few select dealers are without a doubt passing off common date, high mintage coins as "Monster" toned. First, I have come despise that word. For those new to the hobby and reading this, silver rarely exhibits drastic shades of deep vibrant colors and never, repeat, never, appears consistent from one coin to the next. One seller, from California, has multiple listings from time to time of almost electric blue, purple and green which he claims are from being stored at his father's vineyard in Ohio. Impossible! I don't care how many coins put in the same bag and same environment.

So, does this bother anyone else but me? The way I see it if people realize that these are not real toned coins and stop buying them, then these greedy individuals will go away. So new to the hobby people take note. These are NOT toned coins. They are colorized and worthless.

Trying to police the internet is a losing battle. It's not worth stressing out over. People online have the ability to do research and/or ask for help, they also have the ability to decide not to.

There's also people that just don't care and like the look of it which is perfectly fine and their choice.

They're still worth at least melt and depending on the date and mint mark possibly more. Certainly less than a problem free coin and much less than the toners with the huge premiums, but worthless really isn't the right way to describe them
Rest in Peace

All toning is damage to the surface of the coin. Some of that toning is less offensive, or even remarkable.

As is true of almost every aspect of coin collecting, knowledge is the best weapon against deceit as well as one of my greatest pleasures.

Nearly every day someone asks about their great grandfather's prized 1804 dollar, or the cool negative double sided LWC they bought on ebay, or the amazing Spanish treasure coins they bought in Mexico, or the probably unique half of a Half Cent found (in old furniture, old house, old attic, old basement ETC).

This isn't unique to coin collecting. Go to a few country auctions and listen to the "city folk" bid for something that could be fifty years old - and therefore valuable.

Live, listen, learn.

There was a post about that coin doctor you speak of, another member here sold him a buff nickel and a few weeks later he (US vet?) had it nicely toned and " pulled it from cellar"...buyer beware...and lessons learned...you'll never stop greedy people
