Looks like it was once an Encased Coin. One of those "lucky" keepsakes and "never go broke" holder

I agree. When they are removed from the holders, it reveals the damage to the coin pressing it into the holder. So if you have an Encased Coin, leave it in the holder. It will be worth more in the holder, than removed and being a damaged coin.

Not defending anything......this coin looks just like the "Broken Collar" coin depicted in " The Error Coin Encyclopedia" page 252!

Not that odd, they are still making Encased Cents with modern cents today. Here is one that holds a Shield reverse cent. Sorry no image of the obvers so I don't know the actual date, but since the event was in 2010 the coin probably is as well..
