As I go through boxes of half dollars, I come across some crazily toned coins. They look like they survived a house fire or major chemical bath. These always look like crap, so they go in the spend bucket. I have kept a few of the much more moderately toned coins, because I think they look cool.

I am torn on this one. Is this deliberate manipulation of the coin, or did it tone naturally? Interested in thoughts on whether to keep or spend. Thanks!

The coin is just hanging on to AU, or AU-50.

I don't find that toning to be beautiful enough that I would keep it myself. But that is opinion only.

If it were uncirculated I might change my mind, but not with this one.

The toning looks natural, but not especially appealing in those pics. I'm sure it looks better in hand. It's up to you.

I don't ascribe any extra value for toning, so this one is a spend for me. It sounds like you have other, better examples.

I agree with Spence's opinion re toning.
Toning can be an unstable, transitory thing.
A spender.
