This is one of my 1909 penny's. Looking for opinion whether what you see is natural toning or staining.

Seller called it stained, but I was 50/50 on that when looking it over, so got it anyway because it's an otherwise nice 1909. I think its toning, and believe it can grade very well if not rejected for this issue (stained).

If staining...I am thinking of conservation request to see if they can salvage with removal, and then normal grading.

Personally I don't mind the look, but staining is a net negative. Is that correct? I know...some don't like toning at all, but it is what it is.

Firstly, it's not worth getting graded, so save your money there. Secondly, I do believe it's a form of toning from these pics. It almost looks like an oil slick. It's kinda cool just looks a bit out of place with the otherwise red surfaces

Whether it's staining or discoloration due to some sort of environmental exposure (is there a difference?), the coin is definitely not a candidate for grading.

My vote is for staining and not worth profesional conservation or grading.

Doesn't look like staining to me. I sure conservation will do nothing for it and agree , do not send it in .

Nice coin with toning, but not worth getting it graded by a TPG.

Wow. Ok. Glad I asked. Not what I expected. So let me follow up with a couple more questions:

1. Not worth grading...because of toning location?
2. Wear, though I seen way worse do ok?
3. The PIDT noted? Never knew that one. Do now. And I see it. Nice.

No, I did not try acetone. Never done that one. I know what it is. But at moment I see no reason to remove. No grading. It looks very cool. Leave it. G-kids will like. I got them hooked. .

Only asking why no grading, to store info in the data banks of my brain housing group. Not doubting the coin brethren here. Again, glad I asked. Thx all.

It's a stain from improper rinse and dry after a dipping.

What does it cost to send a coin in for grading ? I'm sure it's much more than the value of the coin in the first place. How would anyone ever recoup the cost ?

@eagle. Dipping stain. Never would have thought that. Cause I have zero experience at dipping. Interesting. Going to put under microscope for fun. See what is there. Maybe compare some pics I may find on line. If I find anything interesting I will post.
Rest in Peace

You need a 66 Red to make submission a good idea. This won't make 64. And I agree with IGE - dipped and improperly washed afterwards.

After this thread, I'm just going to melt it for copper value. That's about what I paid for it.

Going to give to my grand daughter. She's 4. Going on 33. lol She loves coins now to. Got her and my daughter going (a nurse) lol. But she gave me one of her two coins last visit. "Here Ah-Pa. For you." Heart warming for sure. Stays next to my computer forever now. Below is a picture of coin she gave me. We each have one now.

I wish it was real
