Has anyone heard of this kind of 'extra ray'? The only ones I've seen are near the shoulder and look like die cracks. This just looks like they put a ray in the wrong spot then polished it off. Somebody went a little bananas with the die polishing all around her head, too Closeup with a bit more light: Obverse, just because: thanks!

I think it's a die clash but I'm no expert. John1

Hi,
I don't think it is a clashed die scenario. It looks to me like an impurity in the outer clad layer. It could also be an unusually shaped discoloration that just happens to look "ray like".
Thanks, Bill

xshift, you have a problem with your overlay. Adams should be upside down unless the coin has a 180 degree die rotation error.

I was wondering about that. I've seen other overlays where the two were not lined up in any particular way (at least I think I have..) so I didn't know if any part of the other side qualified (check devices as the image is rotated) or if the two had to be lined up according to how the coin is. Could one of the dies have been moved? If it's not a die clash, I'd be thinking along the same lines as foundinrolls, but those 5 others on ebay are the exact thing as this. Is it possible to have an impurity or discoloration in the exact same spot on multiple coins? Any other ideas?

My idea is to always leave ebay out of the equation:-) There are too many people that look for things on coins that have no idea what they are looking at that ultimately list them on ebay. The descriptions get really weird to make stain on a coin sound like it makes for the best new collectible since sliced bread:-) I know it's a mixed metaphore:-) Anyway. Look at your coin for what it is without depending on ebay for any help. Since your first overlay is really pretty good, although as mentioned the obverse needs to be upside down and reversed, you may want to try again with the overlay in the proper orientation. A basic question that I should have asked at the beginning...Is the "pseudo ray" raised off the surface of the coin or is that part of the field flat? Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill, I agree about ebay.. I take most things on there with lots of grains of salt. I just mentioned it because it came up while I was searching, and saw the 'ray' was in the same spot. There's another one on there as well.. unfortunately, ebay is the only place I can find when searching that mentions anything like it. The area looks flat to me, not raised in any way. I can try to look at it under higher magnification though - I think I only used my 3x the other day. So, a correct overlay.. after looking at just that section, nothing in that area would cause it. There's something near it, but that won't wash unless the dies were misaligned slightly.

Nice overlay xshift! Looking at your detail photo of Liberty, I'm seeing the "ray" extend as far as the eye of Liberty. I'd agree with Bill's take--it looks like surface coloration in the metal, but I don't understand why this would appear in the same spot on 5 other coins. I think I see a few other streaks running that direction.

I'm going to take a better look at it. That part does look different.. almost like the type of finish that's on the rest of it isn't there.

It does look like it lines up nicely with Adam's jawline.

Last pictures, I swear Kurt, I couldn't see where it ran to the eye. I'm hoping this shows the difference in finish better than the other one. The area is flat to the naked eye but I did pick up a very slight mark with the microscope. Not sure what you can make of it.
