How in the world did the scratch across the obverse get so wonky? It's raised/lowered. Looks sketchy.

Any time an 1880 NFLD half has a full reverse it's worth looking at. Nice coin and I love the toning! Scratches? Reminds me of what an old timer told me a long, long time ago. He'd gone in to sell Newfoundland halves at a major dealer and been told despite their condition he'd only be given bullion value due to the series' low collector interest. So what did he do? He went out to his car and scratched every one with a pocket knife and then took them back in to be sold.

Nice story, Tamarin. I can picture it so easily. I think I would have done the same. That or melted them lol.

I guess the scratches shrunk the pool of buyers too thin.
